Speakers Spotlight: Marlena Bova

When she was eight, Marlena proudly declared to her parents that she was going to be a Senator so she could “stop bad law in its tracks”. It’s hardly a surprise that her early passion for advocacy has led her to spend weekdays (and some weekends) practicing law at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in its specialized litigation group. She generally tries to do this in fabulous shoes.
A product of the year that brought you the Oprah Winfrey Show and Nintendo, Marlena believes strongly in giving back, erring on the side of taking action and the prospects that a deep and immediate recollection of ‘Friends’ quotes offers. She knows that espresso goes hand-in-hand with old school hip hop and when matters need handling, this born-and-bred Winnipegger is equally skilled in preparing for inter-jurisdictional commercial arbitrations and building IKEA kitchens with undersized Allen keys.
Prior to her foray into law, Marlena recruited internationally for the University of Manitoba. She has travelled and studied around the world, including China, Hong Kong, Israel, Jordan, Belize, Guatemala, Turkey and Greece. Marlena currently serves as a Director on the Calgary Keys to Recovery Society, a non-profit organization which provides housing and support for individuals battling addictions and homelessness. She also provides pro-bono legal services through the Provincial Court Civil Claims Duty Counsel and the Queen’s Bench Amicus Court Assistance Program, and is called to the bar in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Marlena now calls Calgary home, with her husband Ryan and world’s-cutest-dog Sophie.
Marlena is proud to be part of the amazing WINK network, having come from a long line of wonderfully stubborn Italian women who, despite being warned, went to university, married (or didn’t marry) whomever they chose, and were successful matriarchs and magnates in their own right. “Nevertheless she persisted”, indeed.
